Ghost In The Shell Review: 8 Ups & 4 Downs
7. Scarlett Johansson's Restrained (But Bada**) Performance
Whitewashing or not, Scarlett Johansson does a great job as The Major here, giving a restrained turn that skirts around typical bada** femme fatale cliches and actually emphasises her character's internal turmoil exceedingly well.
At the same time, she's absolutely killer during the film's action sequences, and despite her diminutive stature, takes down men much bigger than herself in never-less-than-convincing fashion.
It remains to be seen whether or not her presence will propel the film to box office glory (it's honestly not looking good), but it's hard to imagine a Hollywood talent giving a more capable performance than her.
