Ghost In The Shell Review: 8 Ups & 4 Downs
5. It Also Has Fresh Ideas Of Its Own
This is by no means a straight adaptation of the anime, however, actually contributing some surprisingly buoyant ideas to the mix that mesh well with the pre-established narrative.
The hardcore crowd might balk at the idea of Batou's prosthetic eyes being given an origin story, for instance, but it feels fairly organic to the story, and sits comfortably along other aspects of GITS lore that are also incorporated into the plot.
A shot-for-shot remake of the anime would've been horrendously boring and rather pointless, so this compromise feels like a smart approach: it gives fans most of what they want while also changing things up enough that it's not a carbon copy.
