Ghostbusters Reboot: 29 Easter Eggs, References & In-Jokes

15. Stay Puft

Ghostbusters Easter Eggs
Sony Pictures

It wouldn't have been a Ghostbusters movie without some reference back to the iconic villain of the first movie. No not Gozer, the real big bad - the Stay Puft marshmallow man.

In one of the film's more confusing moments, the Ghostbusters come across a ghostly procession of parade balloons floating through New York until they turn out to be evil and attack them. This raises a number of questions: firstly, why would a balloon have a soul? Secondly, why would a balloon choose to be malevolent? And thirdly, what Earthly sins could a balloon actually commit in order to be tormented in Hell for eternity? It's a bloody balloon.

Anyway, the Stay Puft man is the final balloon in the procession and ends up squashing three of the 'Busters when they attempt to burst him with their proton streams. Luckily, Erin ignores all of the internal physics of the film and simply bursts the ghost with a pen-knife, which just raises more questions.
