Ghostbusters Reboot: 29 Easter Eggs, References & In-Jokes
6. "Total Protonic Reversal"
It's a shame that there's no mention of crossing the streams - though that might well have been too on the nose - but the Ghostbusters do talk about the possibility of "total protonic reversal". That of course was what Egon feared would happen in the original if the streams were crossed (though he clearly lied about what would happen if they did do that).
In the new film, the phenomenon is actually greeted with excitement and not the massive sense of doom Egon attempts to sell. The team realise that if they drive Ecto-1 into the vortex, the nukes on top of it will explode and cause a reversal of the spin, sucking the ghosts back in (but apparently nothing else).
It's a lot of hooey (particularly as the humans standing right next to the nuclear activity show no signs of even faint illness), but it's a nice reappropriation of total protonic reversal at least.
