Godzilla: 20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know
4. He Has Fought The Marvel Superheroes
The Marvel superheroes have done a crossover with everyone. Star Trek. Transformers. DC Comics. Eminem. You name it, they've done it.
Because crossovers always sell well, having a comic of the Avengers battling Godzilla was inevitable. He made his debut in the Marvel universe in the 1977 story, Godzilla #1. In his first issue, the Japanese monster breaks free from a glacier to wreak havoc on Alaska. When Nick Fury is alerted of the monster's presence, he sends his SHIELD agents to evacuate the area and take down the beast.
The superheroes of Earth tried everything to stop the colossal creature. Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man teamed up against Godzilla but they couldn't compete with his insurmountable strength. No matter what they tried, Godzilla seemed impossible to defeat.
However, Godzilla has one true weakness; licensing rights. After the licensing ran out, Marvel were no longer allowed to depict the character in the comics. As a result, Godzilla's name was changed to Leviathan and his backstory was completely rewritten.
Because Marvel could be sued since the character was too similar to Godzilla, Leviathan was killed off in 2009.
