5. The Crown Beating Thrones

If there are two things the HFPA loves to give awards to, it's whatever is the hot thing of the minute, to show how cool and hip they are, and Brits. So it's probably no surprise that Netflix's The Crown - which tells the story of a young Queen Elizabeth - picked up the Best TV Series - Drama award.

Although it's by no means bad, the show beat out some more deserving competition, most notably Game of Thrones. The HBO behemoth has never won the award before, and was the only non-new series nominated, so the odds were perhaps always stacked against it. Still, it was coming off the back of one of its best ever seasons, was the best show on TV last year, and while it doesn't necessarily need it, still deserved to be recognised here.
