Good Will Hunting: 5 Reasons It's Matt Damon's Finest Film

1. No Politics

good will hunting 4 I'm not going to get into my personal politics and I don't mind political movies as long as the story comes first and the politics come organically. For example, I loved 'The Ides of March' because it managed to tell a human story of ambition, power and weakness and never fell to the point of selling an agenda. One may have come out naturally, but it doesn't matter at that point. However, Damon can rightly be accused of involving himself with films that seem to throw story to the wind and just push an agenda. Whether I agree with the agenda or not is besides the point. Storytelling is the point. If it's not a human story with realistic characters then why even bother? Damon's movies have suffered as a result. Films like 'Green Zone' and 'Promised Land' have struggled at the box office and I may not necessarily disagree with either film. But, it's become a pandemic and pretty close to a War on Art when liberals AND conservatives seem to be more interested in letting everyone know what they think about today's headlines as opposed to trying to tell a story that would organically and naturally let an audience know how they feel because the emotion and feeling behind the picture would be real in nature as opposed false. 'Promised Land,' 'Green Zone' and some would argue films like 'Syriana' fall into this trap. However, 'Good Will Hunting' was a time when Damon had no interest in pushing or helping to push a left wing or right wing or who cares wing agenda. He was just interested in storytelling and human drama. And damn was it one hell of a story...
