Why?

Before the revelation that he's playing Ravager Stakar (better known in the comics as Starhawk) there were two schools of thought here: either Stallone is playing a character of such limited general importance that he wouldn't even register on the death radar (so he's here in a sort of Stan Lee cameo), or he's at the other end of the scale.

To corroborate the latter theory, James Gunn revealed to The Adam Corolla Show, that his role has wider significance to the MCU:

"We do have a couple of characters who are very important to the Marvel Universe who are going to make their debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which people don't know about. Sylvester Stallone plays one of these characters…"

Two things there, first, you don't call a single appearance a debut in a film series, and secondly, you don't bill a character as "very important" to the shared universe and kill them off immediately. Unless it's just naughty misdirection of course? Why Stakar would remain alive after the movie remains to be seen - and quite how he's of wider importance to the MCU will presumably be revealed when the film lands.
