Halloween: Ranking Every Movie From Worst To Best
8. Halloween II (2009)
Zombie's sequel is a slight improvement over its predecessor, in that at the very least, it feels as though Zombie has been let off the leash and allowed to really make something that is his own.
That's not always for the best. This film is infinitely uglier than any of the other films in the franchise, thanks to Zombie's insistence on desaturating the images to the point of nearly making them black-and-white and to the fact that the entire film is practically shot in shaky close-ups. This makes it hard to even tell what's going on a lot of the time, especially in the entire sequence set in the Rabbit in Red Lounge.
It also has a huge character issue, as it takes iconic characters like Michael Myers, Laurie Strode, and Dr. Loomis and dilutes them to the point that they are unrecognizable.
But the film does take some big swings that you kind of have to admire, even if they don't really work out. This is 100% a Rob Zombie film through and through, for better or worse, and that's infinitely more interesting than his compromised first film.
It's also worth noting that (although it's later revealed to a dream and completely disregarded) the opening hospital sequence is one hell-of-a-ride and it is exactly what a Rob Zombie Halloween film should have always been.
