Halloween: Ranking Every Movie From Worst To Best
5. Halloween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers (1989)
The hill I am, apparently, willing to die on.
Halloween 5 gets a bad rap. Yes, it was rushed out a mere one year after Halloween 4 and there are moments where it definitely feels rushed. There are unequivocally bad things in this film, like the goofy cops (who even get their own honking theme song), the man in black, or literally anything having to do with any of the new characters such as Tina in the second act.
But there are also some absolutely wonderful things in here that get frequently brushed over. For starters, it gets Michael right, portraying him once again as a voyeuristic stalker rather than some all-powerful being who is everywhere at once and can take down entire cities in a matter of hours. Perhaps most importantly though, it nails the dynamic between Donald Pleasence's Dr. Loomis and Danielle Harris' Jamie.
The choice to have Loomis be a man so obsessed with killing Michael at this point that he's completely willing to sacrifice a little girl to get him, and to then have Jamie be fully aware of this, is a bold move. This dynamic is set up early on a paid off beautifully in the third act, which is just Michael, Jamie, and Loomis all alone in the old Myers house having a final showdown.
Halloween 5 is certainly not for everyone but for those who can stomach to low points, there are some incredible high points here.
