When the movie was first announced, one of the main reasons it was an exciting prospect was that, even if the story didn't seem wholly necessary, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were set to direct it. The pair had crafted a reputation as two of the most interesting, unique, subversive, and outright hilarious voices in Hollywood, as well as one for taking on the seemingly impossible and making it work. A revival of Jump Street? Check. The LEGO Movie? Double check.

Time will tell whether their removal from the project was for the best or not - and reports paint a picture of a duo not able to cope with the demands of such a big film, as well as a serious clash of styles with writer Lawrence Kasdan - but some hype went with them. They were the kind of exciting, fresh talents it was a thrill to see Lucasfilm hiring, and it's a major shame that it didn't work out, and an indication of a troubled production, even if Howard is a very good director in his own right.
