Like the rumour that the last word of the entire saga was going to be 'scar' there was a popular theory which went on to become an expectation because of comments that Rowling herself made to support it. Many die-hard fans bought each successive book absolutely convinced that they were going to be introduced to a character who had never shown any signs of magic but would get into Hogwarts and learn it anyway.

Some fans have even confessed to reading and re-reading the entire series looking for this subplot, perhaps hoping that they'd realise that a well-established wizard had started out as a Muggle.

Finally, Rowling was asked in a 2007 interview what happened to this popular and well-known idea. She explained that she had expected this to happen since her earliest plans and it continued for years, but by the completion of the third book she realised that this just wasn't how her world worked. She began her explanation with, quite simply, "I'm sorry about this, but I changed my mind!"
