Hellboy: 10 Flaws That Prove Hellboy 3 Would've Been Better
1. There's Really No Replacing Ron Perlman
This might be one of the more controversial entries on this list, simply because David Harbour truly does an admirable job. Furthermore, this version of Hellboy really isn't the same as the version portrayed in del Toro's movies, which focused more on Hellboy's softer, cat-loving, romantic side. Unfortunately, those differences don't always matter when rebooting a popular character. Just as many will always consider Heath Ledger the only Joker, there will be some fans and critics who simply can't dissociate Hellboy from Ron Perlman.
In that light, this reboot already put Harbour in the unfortunate position of walking in a shadow that he can't possibly overcome. The makeup team, which decided to give him a hairier, greasier appearance, didn't help. There's technically nothing wrong with changing up a character for the sake of a movie, and Hellboy's altered appearance in the reboot serves its intended purpose of making him look slightly younger.
Perlman, however, looked and felt like the comic book character he was portraying in every sense. After two movies with an actor whose look was a perfect fit - and after years of waiting for him to take on the character a third time - Harbour was never going to feel good enough by comparison.
What this actually proves more than anything is that nostalgia can take its toll before a project is even completed. Fans who waited years for Hellboy 3 were always going to feel at least a tiny bit gypped when getting a reboot instead. Perlman himself would have loved to give fans the closure of finishing out the trilogy, referring to Hellboy 3's cancellation as "an open wound." Suffice to say, now that fans have seen the new film, he's not the only one feeling a little sore.
