Hereditary Movie Ending Explained

4. The Writing's On The Wall

Hereditary Movie

In wider terms, director Ari Aster gives us clues throughout the film about what's happening at any given point, with literal writing on the wall of what's going on. Words such as "satony", "liftoach", "pandemonium", and "zazas" are written in various places across their home, even copied into Annie's models when she's painting. Whilst pandemonium seems pretty clear on its meaning, the others aren't so obvious, however.

Apparently, satony is a word used in necromancy, bearing obvious similarity to "satan" in its formulation. Liftoach is the Hebrew word for open, and zazas is a demon conjured by Oujia boards. We were literally being told throughout the movie what was coming for us, but unable to decipher the meaning, left as clueless as the family we're following.

It's fair to say that Annie's model houses, complete with said writing, are representative of this lack of control also. Much like the characters she creates, the Graham's are playthings for Paimon and his cult followers, never truly in control of their lives at any given point.
