Hereditary Movie Ending Explained
3. Paimon
As for the big daddy of the whole event, little information can be found regarding Paimon himself. He first appeared in an anonymous grimoire titled the Lesser Key of Solomon. What can be gleaned is that the King of Hell is one of the devil’s most loyal servants, and a master of art and science - something that seems particularly pertinent when considering the family’s knack for creativity.
Peter is a musician, Annie is a tiny model maker, and Charlie draws and makes dolls religiously. Her obsession with making these out of litter and sticks is another indication of her duality with Paimon, her artwork reflective of his search for the perfect vessel, something she tries to create herself with the raw materials she finds, including a severed pigeon’s head. The creepiness makes sense when you realise she’s got an evil spirit trapped inside her.
Importantly, his sigil is emblazoned across almost every aspect of the family - put there presumably by Ellen before her death. Appearing in blood on the ceiling, printed on delicate necklaces, woven into doormats, and most importantly - carved into the lamppost that knocks Charlie’s head off on the evening that catapults the family into disarray. Paimon is also known to have the power to see both past and future: allowing the cultists to plan ahead in impossibly intricate detail.
