20 Horror Franchises That NEED To Come Back

7. Unfriended

One of the most surprising horror hits of the last decade-or-so is 2014's Unfriended, which is largely credited with popularising the "screenlife" subgenre, where the entire film takes place entirely on a computer screen.

Unfriended ended up grossing an astonishing $62.9 million against a mere $1 million budget, with a sequel being swiftly greenlit.

However, standalone follow-up Unfriended: Dark Web didn't release until 2018, and coming perhaps a little too late to fully capitalise on the original's success, it grossed an underwhelming $16.4 million - barely a quarter of what the first raked in.

Even so, screenlife horror still feels like an under-explored corner of the genre, and considering how cheaply these films can be produced, it's surprising that a streaming service like Shudder hasn't partnered with filmmakers to produce at least a couple more Unfriended movies.

After all, by its nature screenlife is probably better suited to be watched at home.

On top of this, the financial risk is extremely low, and yet if the right people are involved it feels like Unfriended could be a bigger, long-running franchise.
