20 Horror Sequels That Took FOREVER To Get Made

3. The Strangers: Prey at Night

The Strangers was one of the most memorable horror films of the 2000s, and despite grossing almost ten-times its $9 million production budget, Hollywood surprisingly didn't churn out a glut of also-ran sequels in record time.

Instead, in a puzzling act of striking while the iron is cold, we ended up with a largely standalone sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, an entire decade later in 2018.

By this point the IP's popularity had undeniably lost its initial momentum, which combined with the sequel's mixed reviews caused it to gross just a sliver of what its predecessor did.

It was then another six years before we saw The Strangers again, though in the interest of playing catch-up, the recent reboot trilogy was shot back-to-back-to-back and released between 2024 and 2026.

Considering that each successive entry in the new Strangers trilogy grossed less than the one before - even ignoring the awful reviews - we might be waiting a good while before we see another installment.
