20 Horror Sequels That Took FOREVER To Get Made
18. Land of the Dead
George A. Romero closed out his original trilogy of zombie movies with 1985's brilliant Day of the Dead, but of course, his many fans were still left hankering for so much more.
Yet with the general decline of the zombie subgenre throughout the 1990s, the prospect of a fourth film soon evaporated, until zombies became in vogue once more in the mid-2000s thanks to the success of films such as 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead.
And so, Romero decided to get back to work developing his fourth film, Land of the Dead, which he swiftly set up with Universal, who gave him a $15 million budget - far higher than any of the previous entries.
Land of the Dead's modest success led him to produce two sequels in 2007 and 2009 - Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead, though both fell far short of the mark critically and commercially.
The series seemingly reached its natural conclusion with Romero's death in 2017, though in 2021 Romero’s widow Suzanne Romero, announced that his planned finale, Twilight of the Dead, had been resurrected with trusted collaborators completing Romero's script, which was shot last year.
