20 Horror Movie Happy Endings Nobody Saw Coming
1. Hokum
It really didn't seem like Damian McCarthy's new film Hokum would end well for tortured author Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott).
After all, he tries to hang himself while overcome with guilt over accidentally shooting his own mother dead as a child, and on top of this he's an abrasive, tough-to-like character.
It just doesn't seem likely that a positive outcome is destined for Ohm, then, but in the climax Ohm actually manages to make some semblance of peace with his mother's ghost, is saved from the murderous Mal (Peter Coonan), and seems to become a less-burdened, more hopeful person by story's end.
Happy endings can often ring hollow in horror movies when they don't feel earned, but considering the absolute physical and emotional wringer Ohm is put through over the course of the film, it was incredibly cathartic to see him come out the other side a better, more self-actualised human being.
