5. Ridley Scott's Slick Direction

Though Ridley Scott is totally at the mercy of the script's skittishness, he's nevertheless a veteran filmmaker who knows how to deliver appealingly glossy results and tease strong performances from his cast.

That Scott, at 83 years of age, shows no signs of slowing down and continues to corral these large Hollywood productions is extremely impressive.

This is certainly a film that evokes the decadence and glamour of its subjects, courtesy of its many palatial settings, the countless gorgeous costumes on display, and stately cinematography from Scott's regular collaborator Dariusz Wolski.

Rather than opt for stylistic restraint, this is a fittingly gaudy effort from Scott that uses its high production values to underline the hollowness of the Gucci family's internal power struggle.

It's hardly among the best work of Scott's career, but as ever he can be relied upon to deliver compelling work and make the most of the resources afforded to him.
