How Marvel Made Avengers: Infinity War The PERFECT Comic Book Movie

2. The Power Of Consequence

"No resurrections this time."

Avengers: Infinity War wastes no time letting the viewer know that this film is one of consequence. Opening on a dark note with Thanos' laying waste to what's left of the Asgardians and maintaining the same level of brutality throughout, Infinity War never lets the viewer feel safe.

Both sides experience great sacrifice in scenes shockingly dark for the MCU. Yes, the film has trademark MCU humor, but it never robs the circumstances of their gravity.

The Russos do not shy away from putting their characters in a state of sustained threat, nor are they afraid of tasking them with difficult choices. Early on, Gamora makes Quill promise that he'll kill her if she finds herself in Thanos' grasp.

Once that comes to pass, Quill very nearly pulls the trigger, before Thanos disarms him with the Reality Stone. Putting Quill in that position is one thing, but having him learn of Gamora's death as The Avengers have Thanos in their grasp is another. His emotionally fueled response loses The Avengers their shot at removing the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' hand.

Complicated choices are not only shouldered by the heroes, however, as every step of Thanos' journey is punctuated by sacrifice. None are greater than his murder of Gamora, his "favorite daughter." The gravity of the sequence rests on two factors: the murder of a beloved hero and the deep pain registering on Thanos' face. On this quest, even the "victor" emerges with scars.
