After the critical and commercial success of Joker, DC purists hoped other members of Batman’s rogues’ gallery followed suit. Looking at Clayface's tragic backstory, the long-time Batman villain felt like the perfect candidate for a dark adaptation.

After years of rumours and false starts, a project revolving around the haunting shapeshifter finally got the green light. Loosely inspired by Feats of Clay episode from Batman: The Animated Series, 2026's Clayrface follows respected actor, Matt Hagen, whose career is jeopardised after he's left horrifically disfigured. Desperate to reclaim his life, he agrees to an experimental procedure, unaware about the monstrous side effects.

Once considered a campy, B-tier baddie, it's refreshing to see Clayface getting a full-blown horror makeover. With James Watkins in the director's chair and Mike Flanagan writing, this adaptation is sure to lean hard into body horror and tragic monster drama.

Joker: Folie a Deux was a major misfire, but Clayface could set things right. If the film makes a killing at the box office, it could push studios to be bolder with comic book adaptations, ushering in another golden age for DC Comics.
