2. Nolans Warming Up
Nolans body of work to date is impressive by anyones standards, but his films are not universally adored and tend to be subjected to similar criticisms. Much as Nolan himself is uniformly spoken of in glowing terms by his cast and crew, in Hollywood circles he has been described as a cold guy who makes cold films and there is a measured calculation in some of his best work that is undeniable. Nolanites would no doubt disagree, but its one of the few abiding criticisms of one of cinemas best filmmakers. Fortunately, the early word on Interstellar suggests that it is his most personal film to date, and one that resonates in its portrayal of humanity. Anne Hathaway has commented: In this film, I feel his technical prowess and his humanity are presented in the most balanced way. Jessica Chastain believes that Nolans position as a father of several young children has resulted in his most personal film, and his wife Emma Thomas has also called it his most emotional work yet. In that Nolan has referenced original director Steven Spielbergs works several times when discussing Interstellar, it is pleasing to hear that the film apparently has a big heart to go with its grand scale.
