Interstellar: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Need To See
12. Endurance
The exploration imagery continues with the name of the ship that Cooper pilots up to space. Obviously, Endurance is a smart fit for the mission - it signifies humanity's enduring spirit and attempt to survive - but the name goes further than that. It is clearly a reference to Ernest Shackleton's expedition to the South Pole, one of the greatest survival stories in human history. Crucially, it also foreshadows the disaster of the mission, and reading Shackleton's apparent recruitment call adds even more links to Interstellar:
"Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success. Sir Ernest Shackleton."
