Interstellar: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Need To See
7. The Ghost Of Spielberg
It should be no surprise to anyone who has now seen Interstellar to learn that Steven Spielberg was once attached as director - for around two years after Jonathan Nolan came on board as writer. There are some obvious similarities in Spielberg's wider canon, like the parallel of familial conflict and wider more globally impacting issues, the image of the modern, broken family and the commitment to engaging a broad audience despite serious subject matter. Christopher Nolan openly admits that he was inspired by the blockbusters he saw when growing up, and cites Jaws and Close Encounters as specific examples of those films that didn't need a family angle to sell the spectacular to a broad audience. There's also something very Spielberg-like in the charisma of the film's two robots: their personalities feel like they belong in his films rather than such a serious one as Interstellar.
