James Cameron: Ranking His Films From Worst To Best
5. True Lies
When it comes to action, despite the high concept nature of his setups, Cameron is known for being incredibly grounded when the shooting starts. Main characters never feel invincible, and if they do have powers, then their enemies always have more than enough ability to put them on their back foot, which gives every action scene a much needed weight and gravitas to keep you hooked.
In True Lies, Arnold grabs two dogs by their heads and slams their bodies into each other like he's in a Hanna-Barbera cartoon. This is definitely Cameron's most ridiculous film, in terms of its action scenes at least, but trust me, the story has its moments. And while with any other director, this would be the kind of tonal whiplash that the film would never recover from, here, with a director known for such visceral violence in his action scenes, it actually makes it better.
True Lies is unmistakably itself, even when compared to Cameron's other films. And that's all it really needs to be. You're never going to mistake this for another film, and that uniqueness is what has given it its lasting appeal among Cameron fans. No film that features Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis making out in front of a nuclear blast can be forgettable.
