3. Grinch - The Grinch
Even as a child, it amazed me that a movie studio would ever pay an actor $20 million to
dress up so they were unrecognisable. It doesn't make a whole lot more sense to me as an adult, to be honest, beyond it giving studios the ability to plaster Jim Carrey's name over the movie's poster, which at this point in his career was still a veritable license to print money. Though Ron Howard's move is far from bad - in fact, it's not bad at all - Carrey isn't really able to do much with the classic Dr. Seuss character, due to the performance-encroaching make-up he is forced to wear. There was rarely a moment throughout where, aside from having seen the trailer, I was aware that we were witnessing Jim Carrey's classic comic affectations. Though some might see that as a bonus, it felt like any half-talented comic actor could have pulled this role off, and Carrey was really just wasted in it.
