Although we posted an article in
December that said
J.J. Abrams had been officially hired for the gig of directing
Star Trek, talk soon spread over the Internet that it wasn't true. Abrams of course created both hit TV shows
Lost and
Alias along with directing
Tom Cruise in
Mission Impossible III last year. Places like
Latino Review, were adamant that he had left the project, citing problems with the studio over the amount of changes he wanted to make. Well,
The Hollywood Reporter are confirming that J.J. Abrams will indeed direct Star Trek XI which at this point is being described as a "relaunch movie". We are guessing, the movie will be like
Batman Begins, in that it will use the famous characters from the already established franchise but they will have no ties or continuity to the other films. So we can expect Spock, Kirk, Bones, Scotty and probably most of the original characters to be used.... the trade confirm that casting should begin within next couple of weeks, so it will be interesting who gets the job of filling these famous roles. You all know why I think Abrams and the idea of a prequel IS TOTALLY THE WRONG THING FOR THIS FRANCHISE, but for those that missed my rant, you can read it again by

AICN's Quint is still expected to talk to Abrams today, so no doubt we will have some more info on Trek and
The Dark Tower adaptation he is working on! source -
