Joker: Every Character Ranked Worst To Best

5. Sophie Dumond

Joker Zazie Beetz
Warner Bros.

Because of an incredibly clever quirk of the film's narrative, Sophie is a strangely undeveloped character, remaining sort of ethereal. There is a very good reason for this, which sets the tone for the rest of the film's elusive narrative trust, but it does come at a necessary cost to her as a character. She's the way she is, because that's how Arthur sees her, effectively.

Considering how many people threw around accusations of Arthur being an incel and being inspired to become a monster because of Sophie's rejection of him, it's good that the film refuses to be drawn on such an obvious choice and we get something far more interesting in its place.

For what it's worth, Zazie Beetz does well with the material she's given, particular the last scene she's involved in and it's a restrained performance that is a lot cleverer than it might be given credit for, because at no point does it give the game away.
