Jude Law: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Alfie - Alfie (2004)

Alfie 2004 Jude Law Maybe it's unfair to compare Jude Law's performance against Michael Caine's when it comes to Alfie and its 2004 remake, but what are you gonna do? It's sort of impossible not to, even if you set out to judge each movie and its lead actor on their own merits. So it's safe to say that Law wasn't the worst choice to star in an Alfie remake - in fact, given his panache for celebrity scandals and his real-life London upbringing, he was rather apt. But one could certainly argue that his performance here is off - too much shallow charge, not enough character development. Obviously, given Alfie's position as a lady's man and all-round manipulator of women, the sexual energy was necessary. Thing is, whereas we couldn't help but like Caine's version of the character despite the things he was doing, Law's presence makes it far more difficult to do so. He's too smarmy, too full of himself. The way Caine played it, you knew all that, too, but his cheeky chappy persona felt real and not quite as forced. Jude Law certainly radiates an effortless amount of charisma here, but it's not enough to get us into bed with him.
