Justice League Review: 4 Ups & 7 Downs

5. Steppenwolf Is A Terrible Villain

Steppenwolf v Wonder Woman Justice League

The writing has been on the wall for a long time, but yes, Steppenwolf is a painfully generic villain, with little in the way of character development or, honestly, much of an interesting motive at all.

Ciaran Hinds does about as great a job as anyone could expect with the supervillain's voice, but the dodgy CGI combined with how non-threatening he comes across on-screen makes him a mostly damp squib, even less interesting than the MCU's most low-effort baddies such as Malekith and Ronan.

It's clear watching this that the DCEU is holding itself back for Darkseid, but if he's just another dull performance-captured also-ran, it's hard to be even remotely excited.
