Lord Of The Rings: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Wizards
7. The Blue Wizards Were More Important Than You Think
The Blue Wizards only got one brief mention throughout Peter Jackson's double trilogy. Even Tolkien barely gave them a thought in his original writings. But throughout the later part of his life he revised his initial thoughts about them.
They were sent along with Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast to Middle-earth to aid in the fight against Sauron. Their travels took them into the Far East, and we're told no one really knew what become of them. But in his expanded letters and writings, Tolkien theorised they could have been far more important to the War of the Ring than he originally alluded to.
They essentially set themselves up amongst the Easterlings and Haradrim to aid in the resistance against Sauron. It was thought they may have succumbed to evil, in much the same way Saruman did. Later, Tolkien toyed with the idea, that they may have actually been successful in undermining Sauron's power and influence.
Tolkien wrote that if it weren't for the work of Blue Wizards, aiding the men of the East, Sauron's armies would have been far more powerful. He also gave them new names, Morinethar and Rómestámo, translating to "Darkness Slayer" and "East-helper" respectfully; further evidence of their potential success.
