"Superman's too dark!" has to be the most common criticism people fling at Henry Cavil's hero, and, to their credit, DC and Warner Bros. are clearly working on fixing this. The trailers for Justice League have emphasized Superman's role as a figure of hope, so you can bet that Man of Steel 2 will double down on this even further.

So what the sequel has to deliver is a plot that focuses on the need for a figure of optimism in a dark world like the DCEU. Enter: What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & The American Way?

After the Elite, a gang of murderous superpowered vigilantes, become the world's favourite new superheroes, Superman must stop them and prove to the world that killing is never the answer. Though the original comic was a single issue storyline, it has been proven worthy of a feature-length adaptation before in the animated movie Superman vs The Elite.

If you're thinking this story would be impossible in a universe where Superman murdered General Zod, then you're wrong. What a movie version of this comic could do is tackle that controversial moment head on and use it as the reason why he is so against killing now. If Zod's death is ignored in future movies, it will always be hanging over Cavill's Superman. But this storyline could prove just how much Superman has grown since his first film and why he will never make that decision again.
