Thor was released way back in 2011, and fans were blown away by some cool Easter Eggs inside Odin's vault. At the time, no one could have imagined appearances from the Infinity Gauntlet and Eye of Agamotto would actually lead to anything, and it just seemed liked a fun way to pay homage to the comic books.

Of course, fans were left thoroughly confused when Thanos was shown with his own Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Thankfully, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi would set the record straight when he had Hela declare the one in side Odin's vault a "fake" in the 2017 movie.

Avengers: Infinity War would later reveal that Eitri made the Infinity Gauntlet for Thanos, and that further confirmed the Mad Titan never found his way into Asgard to steal it as some fans long suspected. Kevin Feige has jokingly said it was always the plan to reveal Odin's Infinity Gauntlet as a copy, but it seems the growth of the MCU is what led to this retcon.

As for the Eye of Agamotto, as that was always in the hands of Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, it seems the King of Asgard had a thing for fake trinkets.
