And that's in no small part to Chris Hemsworth's nuanced performance as Thor, taking a larger than life figure and making him believable. Of course, we were introduced to Tom Hiddleston, who stole (and continues to steal) every scene he is in as the villainous Loki.
X Men First Class showed that a period setting for a superhero could work, and
Captain America: The First Avenger was no exception. Again we had a performance with depth and heart from Chris Evans as the titular hero with some great moments in an unfamiliar superhero setting. And then to cap it all off (pardon the pun), we got the brilliant Joss Whedon to bring his unique brand of drama, humour and action in
The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble over here in the UK just in case, God forbid, we confused it with the ham-fisted big screen remake of the acclaimed 1960s TV series). For me, it met all my expectations. A superhero team up has to be epic. The final battle of New York certainly delivered on that scale, and the four main stars all got their own great moments (and just how amazing was Mark Ruffalo?). I don't know how comic book aficionados found the movie but as someone who knew nothing of the rich history it came from, it certainly blew me away. Overall, Phase 1 was a bold experiment that succeeded and then some. With great casting and things us causal viewers had never witnessed before on film, it set the precedent for many more great things to come... not just in the Marvel cinematic universe, but for superhero movies as a whole.
