3. Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)

If this conversation were about the most surprisingly great MCU movies, there's no question that Guardians Of The Galaxy would come top. When you think of all of the other true greats, they all had a background and an established brand, whether that was Captain America or The Avengers or Iron Man, to lean on.

Guardians was an oddball cosmic comedy made by a genre film-maker based on a comic no mainstream movie fans read starring Vin Diesel, a WWE star, that funny guy from Parks & Rec and Benicio Del Toro playing a space Liberace. Oh and it had a tree and a raccoon as two key players. It should not have worked.

But thanks in part to exceptional casting that made expectations take a running jump and incredibly marketing (that first trailer was and still is AMAZING), Gunn laughed in the face of suggestions that audiences would need to know the team first to care.

He built a story about odd-balls and rejects coming together for the greater good - but still committing themselves to being "a-holes" - which is impossible not to fall in love with.
