Considering how epic Endgame is, it's incredible how many films still rank above it in the MCU's general ranking.

Remarkably, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Russos - at this point best known for You, Me & Dupree - turned Captain America's sequel into a 1970s-like political intrigue movie dealing in espionage and surveillance state anxiety and introducing the definitive idea of superhero registration to the MCU in a big way.

And even with those big ideas on show, the success of the sequel boils down to something much more personal - the conflict between two childhood best friends torn apart by circumstance, which is what really makes it.

The script is genius, the stakes compelling and more than anything the Russos proved that a film can be about toxic politics and not end up being as painfully dull as The Phantom Menace.
