If you're in the camp of people who believe that Thanos is just misunderstood and he had the universe's best interests at heart, you're believing the trumped up lies of a cult leader whose agenda is bare-faced self-promotion. Yes, he's a convincing guy, but he's also completely reprehensible. Look at how he treated his "children" for instance.

The audio commentary actually confirms that Thanos could have doubled resources in the universe (even though there is evidence to suggest it wouldn't have helped), but that he chose not to. Because he's a spoilt brat of a sociopath who absolutely does not deserve sympathy or empathy, according to the film-makers:

"People have asked us why Thanos didn't just use the Stones to double the resources in the universe, since clearly, he has not. ... Well, he was told no to an idea that he had that he felt was the only solution. And then was proved right to himself when that solution was not acted upon. So, his Messianic complex - he is now committed to following through on the idea that he had many, many years ago."

At one point in an earlier draft, there was also more of Thanos’ backstory and more scenes set on Titan, but all were cut. That's where the idea of 30 minutes of additional Thanos material came from.
