7. Unworthy - Thor
A recurring motif within Thor's overarching story is about whether or not he's truly worthy of the power he has.
In his first film, Thor is banished from Asgard by Odin and rendered a mortal, and Mjolnir is protected with a spell that means only the worthy can lift it. He eventually finds the hammer, being held by a nearby SHIELD facility, and fights his way through waves of soldiers to get to his weapon. But he can't lift it.
The whole scene is intense. Seeing such a powerful being beaten down and mortal - mixed with the rain that's pouring on him, and the clear anguish he feels from not being able to pick up Mjolnir - is hard to watch.
Nonetheless, it is one of Thor's best ever moments, and shows that even the strongest of characters can be beaten and without hope.
