12. The Music Is Really Another Character

From the very first trailer the music was a key component of Guardians of the Galaxy, so much so that we've seen countless movies (or at least their trailers) trying to mimic this approach since then.

What the imitators get wrong, however, is in thinking that it's enough to simply have some bold musical choices. Here, every song on Awesome Mix Vol. 1 has a real purpose and is rooted in the character of Peter Quill, his story and relationships, especially to his mother.

It essentially serves as an extension of Meredith, but so much so that it really serves as its own character in the movie: a guiding hand for Peter that brings him to the family he'd all but given up on having. When Guardians first hit, the music helped make it an absolute blast, but watching it now and knowing where it's taking him, it serves as a map for his journey as well as being a collection of rock classics and deep cuts.
