Even though we've become so accustomed to characters like Rocket and Groot, it's still a little mind-boggling that Marvel decided to make a movie out of such D-list characters.

From the intergalactic setting to the band of misfits and oddballs brought together, to the added emphasis on humour, VFX, and irreverence, pretty much everything about this movie represents the biggest risk the MCU has taken.

They succeed, though, by doing the movie equivalent of slapping your dick on the table; it's the most confident a MCU movie has ever been in itself, it knows exactly what it is and what it wants to accomplish, and while it does have its issues it just completely goes for it to the vision of James Gunn and co-writer Nicole Perlman.

Marvel have continued branching out with the likes of Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, and the upcoming Captain Marvel, but this remains their ballsiest effort to date.
