S.H.I.E.L.D. has played a huge part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since Phil Coulson was told they needed to shorten the name way back in 2008. Even after the organisation was discovered to truly be HYDRA in 2014 it has still impacted the franchise.

In 2019, S.H.I.E.L.D. was arguably explored more than ever before as Captain Marvel took audiences into the past and showed Nick Fury as a relatively young agent. This also introduced a previously unknown part of the Tesseract’s history at S.H.I.E.L.D.

It had always been thought that the Tesseract had simply stayed with S.H.I.E.L.D. from when Captain America was fished out of the ocean, to when Loki came to Earth to steal it, but it had in fact been the subject of an entire division of the organisation, had left Earth, and even spent some time inside the stomach of a Flerkin.

Mar-Vell worked with the Tesseract as part of Project PEGASUS (the incredibly shoe-horned full name of which was Potential Energy Group – Alternate Sources – United States), and though the project was covered up once Thor left the planet with the infinity stone, it can be clearly be seen sign-posted at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ before the building imploded.
