4. Asa Butterfield (Spider-Man)

Hugo and Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield made it down to the final four candidates to play Peter Parker, though he was ultimately dismissed in favour of fellow Brit Tom Holland, of course.

Would It Have Worked?: Butterfield's a solid actor, but he's had a bit of an awkward transition into semi-adult roles, and his movies also have a tendency to tank at the box office, which was clearly a major strike against him.

He'd certainly nail the down-to-Earth appeal of Parker being played by an actual high school-age kid, but it's hard to believe he'd also bring the same charm that Holland did.
