There was a throwaway joke made when Scott Lang was pitching the time heist to Tony Stark, in that he was taking the rules of time travel from Back to the Future as real. He wanted to make sure no one interacted with their former selves, and even though it was through ridiculous reasoning, it was actually good advice.

Captain America managed to disguise himself as his past self to get the scepter from Brock Rumlow and Jasper Sitwell, using the phrase he would never otherwise utter in a lift directly from the pages of the Secret Empire comic arc, but it wasn’t so easy to fool himself.

The 2012 version of Steve Rogers bumped into the 2023 version, and understandably assumed that he was Loki in disguise. The God of Mischief had just taken the form of Cap briefly, and so the two came to blows, one with the cowl and one without.

Perfectly matched, with both able to do it all day, modern day Cap grabbed the victory by shocking old Cap with the news that Bucky was alive. It was smart, and finished with the now iconic line about America’s ass.
