MCU Phase 4: 10 Marvel Movies Taika Waititi Should Direct

3. Squirrel Girl

Before you laugh her off, just remember it’s canon that Squirrel Girl once defeated Thanos. Granted, it happened off panel and Squirrel Girl has a running gag where she somehow topples much stronger foes, but still. It happened.

She might still seem like a ridiculous pick, but many thought that of perennial comic B-listers Guardians Of The Galaxy before their movie launched. With a suitably quirky star like Anna Kendrick, Zooey Deschannel or Hailee Steinfeld and Taika Waititi bringing the levels of weirdness he showed in What We Do In The Shadows or Eagle Vs Shark, it could end up being a surprise hit.

She was originally conceived as lighthearted relief against the deep and dramatic storylines that were beginning to creep into comic books in the 90s. The MCU is already pretty quippy, but it has come in for some criticism for its formulaic final battles where the hero fights a thematically dark version of themselves.

With Hela, Hulk and Sutur bringing the destruction of Asgard (the place, not the people), that’s a trope Waititi has already avoided. Considering Squirrel Girl once defeated Galactus by asking him nicely not the eat the planet, she definitely provides another opportunity to break the mold.
