MCU Phase 4: 15 Essential Rumours & Theories You Need To Know

5. Secret Invasion Will Be The Next Big Event

The Rumour:

Ever since it was announced that the Skrulls would show up in Captain Marvel, fans have theorised that Kevin Feige has big plans for the aliens going forward. The beings were - and still are - a key part of the Marvel Universe, and no other event signifies that more than Secret Invasion.

The storyline, written by Brian Bendis with art by Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales and Laura Martin, saw the alien shapeshifters infiltrate Earth's superhero community before launching an all out invasion. It seems like an interesting premise for a film (although that too is debatable), but could it actually happen in Phase 4?

The Response:

Until Captain Marvel releases in March, there's no way of telling just how much the Skrulls will influence the MCU. That film is set to adapt elements from 1971's Kree-Skrull War, but until we know the strength of both the Kree and Skrull empires in the present day, there's no way of telling if either party retains an interest in Earth.

That being said, Secret Invasion does seem like something of an inevitability in the MCU. The Skrull's reputation precedes them, and with shapeshifting aliens too great an opportunity to pass up - especially now with the Fantastic Four on the horizon - there may actually be some weight to this theory.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
