22. Groot

Status: Alive

Rocket might have though he was in danger for a while there, but Groot is definitely fine and will be back. Whether that will be as a whiny treenager (why is nobody using that?!) or not remains to be seen, but he's fine.

Next Up: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3

It's surely only a matter of time before some of Groot's backstory alongside Rocket's and if Vol 3 explores a little of those mysteries while tying up the Sovereign story and finding Gamora, it's going to be a truly great sequel.

We should definitely expect him to be older again by the time it comes out though.

21. Nebula

Status: Alive

The whole issue of your past self being killed and the causality further down the timeline is a confusing one, but it essentially boils down to this one statement: no matter what, the future is not impacted by changes made to the past, because, fundamentally, you are always in your own present - even when in the past. So, basically, it doesn't matter that Nebula's 2014 past is killed, because she's in a timeline where she's already lived her past.

All crossed eyes and sore heads aside, it just means that she's free to come back in the future and won't have any weird connectivity issues with her own past brain.

Given that she's seemingly a member of the Guardians team now (which makes sense since she has no mission of vengeance to undertake) she'll be back for James Gunn's threequel.
