The biggest villain faced by the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far has been Thanos.
With the death of his own planet Titan, Thanos was been on a quest to bring balance to the galaxy in the only way he knew how: he wants to wipe out half of all life in the universe.
To achieve this, the Mad Titan went from planet to planet and randomly chose who would live and who would be sacrificed for the greater good. He searched for the Infinity Stones in order to realise his ultimate goal with a snap of the fingers.
Part of what makes Thanos such a huge villain, is his motivations. He goes on this quest because he believes that it is the only way to save the universe. After he achieves what he sets out to do, he can hang up his armour and live in a grateful world.
