Just a few months after Black Panther's solo outing in 2018, Carol Danvers will be stepping into the MCU just in time for the conclusion of the Infinity War saga the following year. Though both of their films are sandwiched between the two parts of the massive Avengers story, Captain Marvel's story will serve as the true final step of Phase 3 before everything that's happened since 2008 finally comes to a head in 2019.

While the MCU has already been populated by some great female heroes, including Black Widow, Peggy Carter, Daisy Johnson and Melinda May, as well as some who will have the chance to truly spread their wings in future films, like Agent 13 and Hope van Dyne, Captain Marvel is important for being the studio's first female-driven film.

In the comics, she's palled around with the Guardians, led the Avengers and has repeatedly demonstrated just how powerful she can be, with her flight, strength and other abilities all wrapped in an intellectual package that perfectly matches brains with brawn. As contracts begin to end, she's the perfect candidate to lead the Avengers in a post-Thanos world headed into Phase 4 and beyond and gift the world with a new cinematic hero to look up to.
