Michael Bay – Ranking His Films From Worst To Best

7. Pain And Gain

Bay spoke for years about wanting to make a smaller, more character-driven movie that told the true story of a gang of criminal bodybuilders. It was always on the back burner while he worked on bigger movies, but after he got Dark Of The Moon out of his system he made sure it was his next project He got a starry cast together and made it for a budget that wouldn€™t even have covered the effects for a Transformers movie. Was Pain And Gain the movie to prove there€™s a soulful, deep auteur inside Bay after all? Well, not really. While he makes some cynical swipes at the American dream and the pursuit of perfection, he€™s more interested in treating the real story €“ which was already pretty crazy €“ like a sitcom. But like his other movies proved humour isn€™t his strong point; so occasionally the film is hilarious, but since he can let a joke sit he either oversells it or explains it to death. Still the performances €“ especially from The Rock and Ed Harris €“ are strong, the movie looks great and even if it doesn't completely work, it's nice to see Bay a little outside his comfort zone.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
